It was most recently rebuilt in 1714 – 1715, to a design by John James (c 1673 – 1746), replacing a medieval church. Launcelot Dowbiggin, a City joiner and surveyor, rebuilt the tower (illustration, right), perhaps to his own design, following the general plan of James'. The rector claims that the crypt shows evidence of a preceding Anglo-Saxon church. The interior of the church was altered in 1876.
