Srinagar (city)


 

Srinagar is a city in Jammu and Kashmir, India. Location: {{coor dms|34|5|23|N|74|47|24|E|}} situated in the valley of Kashmir, on both banks of the Jhelum, a tributary of the Indus river. Srinagar is the summer capital of the state government of Jammu and Kashmir.

The city was founded by the King Pravarasena over 2,000 years ago. It was also the capital during the reign of Zain ul Abideen, a ruler who was tricked by Akbar when he failed to conquer Kashmir by force. Zain ul Abideen remains buried in Bihar in India. Akbar was the first invader and occupier of Kashmir, followed by the Afghans, the Sikhs, and finally India and Pakistan. The British held the state as a dominion with a Dogra ruler.

After achieving independence from Great Britain, the city along with the state of Kashmir was invaded by Pakistani and Indian troops in a bid to conquer it.

Srinagar is well known for its lakes. Dal Lake with its houseboats is famous all over the world. Srinagar is a small and beautiful city with a wonderful climate in the summer.
