Enrolling students from Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx, as well as nearby suburbs, Spence reflects the multiracial character of New York City. The small size of the school ensures that every student has the opportunity to assume a leadership position, work closely with her peers and discover her talents by the time she graduates. A diverse student body is essential to the climate of independent thinking the school encourages.

Spence makes an effort at diversity. Spence families represent a range of ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds, and many come from countries outside the United States. Students of color make up 15 percent of the students enrolled in all three divisions; in the Upper School, 29 percent are students of color. At the same time, the typical Spence girl has parents who can easily afford the high tuition, and, like its peer institutions, constantly struggles with the realities associated with the high expectations of the high-achieving parents.
