Spence is a very good friend of Doug Heffernan (Kevin James). He is usually considered the 'loser' of the group. He is often afraid of being 'kicked out' of the group. He thinks he is being replaced by Doug's cousin Danny (Gary Valentine). Spence works at the subway where he collects tolls inside his booth.

Spence is often ridiculed for having some homosexual qualities. But he's not gay, though he rarely has a girlfriend. He has only had one steady girlfriend. Her name was Denise (Rachel Dratch). He and Denise eventually broke up.
