According to Shorter (as quoted in Don Heckman's liner notes), in writing the material for this album he was "thinking of misty landscapes with wild flowers and strange, dimply-seen shapes — the kind of place where folklore and legends are born And then I was thinking of witchburnings too." The only track not to fit this is "Infant Eyes", which was inspired by Shorter's daughter, though "Dance Cadaverous" has, apart from Shorter's thoughts of medical students about to start work on a body, suggestions of Jean Sibelius' Valse Triste.
