The South Downs is the last of the 12 areas chosen in the 1947 report by a Government committee, chaired by Sir Arthur Hobhouse, which has yet to become a National Park. The establishment of a National Park in the South Downs received support from the government in September 1999.

As of September 2005, the result of a public inquiry is being awaited. The inquiry's inspector will recommend to Government whether a National Park should be confirmed and if so, where it's boundaries should be. If confirmed, the new National Park would come into existence in about another year, perhaps in early 2007.
