The Board of Regents controls all institutional decisions for the six public universities in South Dakota, operating with a total budget of approximately $306 million. The board is made up of nine members, eight of whom serve six-year terms, and all of whom are appointed by the Governor and confirmed by the state senate. The ninth member is a student regent, who is a full voting member but serves only a two-year term. The board employs an Executive Director to coordinate legislation, oversee and work with university presidents, and ensure that the board's goals are carried out.
