Sorcerer II


 

The Sorcerer II Expedition is a two-year maritime expedition for studying environmental genomics. The Expedition would circumnavigate Earth, focusing on aquatic and terrestrial microbial populations. Craig Venter originally announced the Expedition on 4 March 2004. The Discovery Channel plans to distribute in 2005 a documentary film on the Expedition.

Sorcerer II, the diesel-powered sailing sloop used in the Expedition, was designed by Frers and built by Cookson in 2004. She's thirty meters in length and bears the flag of the United States. Her interior is waterproof, despite the presence of sequencing equipment.
