This version of the Sonic the Hedgehog universe is a hybrid series, mixing characters and situations started in the SatAM cartoon and the Sonic video games by Sega. In the comics, Sonic lives in Knothole Village, a city-like place in more recent stories (in the past it had a more "small village" look). Over time, the status quo changed from from "a band of Freedom Fighters who fought an evil dictator-like figure (the original Dr. Robotnik)" to "fighting a Robotnik from an alternate dimension who intends to conquer" just like the first Robotnik did. Unlike the early comics, when there was a shattered kingdom, the newer ones show that the shattered kingdom has now recovered and garnered recognition once again. Dr. Eggman, who is actually another Robotnik from another zone (the original, Robotnik Prime, from the zone the story takes place, was presumed dead, defeated by Sonic in issue #50 until it was found out that he exists in a state of limbo and was only able to come back once for a very brief time until disapperaing for what may be forever), has found its location, and now is in the middle of a war with the Kingdom of Acorn, ruled by King Acorn and Queen Alicia in Knothole.

The Archie Sonic comic also makes a number of adaptations. For instance, while it started with the same foundation as SatAM, it also adapted some of the video games' storyline. This led the comic to introduce characters like Knuckles the Echidna and Shadow the Hedgehog. Yet it is still unknown to us if Shadow is a villain, he has been involved in many controversial battles with Sonic, and his friends. As the comic progresses we discover more about Sonic's past, present, and future. The comic offered a potential future for Sonic called "Mobius: 25 Years Later", showing Sonic eventually becoming King of Mobius, but at the same time having a bad relationship with his previously good friend Knuckles, whose right eye, he blew of; Archie's editors have consistently maintained that this is only a possible future, and it is not set in stone. The Sonic comic does not hesitate to put others in the main light of the story. Examples are Tails as the chosen one, Shadow investigating his true origins, Lara-su (a possible daughter in Knuckles' future) going back in time to prevent her father's first death, and a few others. Yet Sonic is always there somewhere in the spotlight, to support or save his friends.

However, while Archie adapts quite a number of plot points (usually by the mandate of Sega themselves), it also has made a few of its own original storylines not adapted from the games, such as newer plots, for example, and new characters, even though they are trademarks of Sega (for example, Mina Mongoose, Elias Acorn).
