Song Dynasty (420-479)

The Song Dynasty (宋朝, previous spelling Sung) (420-479) was first of the four Southern Dynasties in China, followed by the Qi Dynasty. It was found by the Liu family.

The dynasty is often called the Southern Song Dynasty (??) or Liu Song Dynasty (??) to distinguish it from a later Song Dynasty (960-1279) of China that is much more famous and significant. (However, after the later Song Dynasty moved its capital to Lingan (modern Hangzhou, Zhejiang), it was also often referred to as "Southern Song Dynasty.")

This particular Song Dynasty was a time when there was much internal turmoil. A number of emperors were incompetent and/or tyrannical, which at least partially led to many military revolts. These incompetent and/or tyrannical rulers include Liu Shao, Emperor Xiaowu, Emperor Qianfei, Emperor Ming, and Emperor Houfei. This instability eventually led to its destruction. However, its founder Emperor Wu was considered one of the greatest generals during the Southern and Northern Dynasties period, and the reign of its third emperor, Emperor Wen, known for its political stability and capable administration by not only the emperor but strong and honest officials, was known as the Reign of Yuanjia and one of the relative golden ages for the Southern Dynasties.
