Somebody to Love

"Somebody to Love" is a well-known and influential rock song first recorded by The Jefferson Airplane. Written by Grace Slick and her brother-in-law Darby Slick, the song first appeared on the group's 1967 album Surrealistic Pillow and was the band's first and biggest single hit. Grace Slick's driving vocal is the focal point of the song, which has a hard-rock sound, standing out among the group's more typical psychedelia. The lyrics, unusually, are in the second person, with each two-line verse setting a scene of alienation and despair, and the chorus repeating the title of the song, with slight variations: ".../Don't you need somebody to love? / Wouldn't you love somebody to love? /..." The song later became a staple on Album Oriented Rock and Classic rock radio in the United States.
