Solomon R. Guggenheim
Solomon Robert Guggenheim (1861 – 1949) was a American art collector and philanthropist. He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania as son of Meyer Guggenheim and brother to Simon, Benjamin, Daniel and four others. He's family was from German settlers. He was educated in Switzerland after which he returned to the United States and worked in the family mining business, and he later founded the Yukon Gold Comapany in Alaska. In 1919 he retired in order to become an art collector and in 1937 he established the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation to foster the appreciation of modern art. He died in 1949.
