Solomon P. Ortiz

Solomon Porfirio Ortiz (born June 3, 1937) is a politician from the state of Texas. He is a Democrat.

Ortiz is currently serving his 12th term in the United States House of Representatives, serving the 27th Congressional District of Texas (map) based in Corpus Christi. He previously served as Nueces County Commissioner and Sheriff before his election to the newly formed 27th District in 1982. Ortiz was born in Robstown to a migrant family, and worked for his hometown newspaper while growing up.

During his time in the House, he has maintained a moderate voting record, with a reputation of bipartisanship. He is arguably the most conservative Hispanic Democrat in the House. He is also currently serving as the Dean of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.
