Sol

The word sol can refer to any of the following:

• Sol is the name or personification of the Sun (in Latin), and also refers to sunlight, sunbeam, east (the direction where the sun rises). The Latin name is widely known, but not common in general English usage, although the related adjective solar is. It is more frequently used in science fiction writing as a formal name for the star, perhaps to avoid the geocentric associations of the word Sun. By extension, the Solar System is often referred to in science fiction as the "Sol System". Sol also means sun in Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Danish, Norwegian, and Swedish.
• The term sol is used by planetary astronomers to refer to the duration of a solar day on the planet Mars. A mean Earth solar day is approximately 24 hours. • The sol is also the currency of Peru (ISO 4217 currency code: PEN).
• Sol Invictus, the Roman god of the sun, was equivalent to the Greek god Helios. See Helios for more details.
• Norse mythology features a sun goddess named Sól (with the s-rune ᛋ named after her).
• In solfege, sol is the fifth note of the music scale.
• Sol. is an abbreviation for solution. A sol is a colloidal solution in which the system is apparently liquid. If water is the continuous phase, the system is called a hydrosol.
