Soil is unconsolidated rock particle that lies on the surface of the earth, intermingled, perhaps, with organic matter from plant decay.

Soil is vital to all life on earth because it supports the growth of plants, which supply food and oxygen and absorb carbon dioxide. Soil serves as a habitat for animal life from microorganisms to small animals.
