Snickerdoodle

A snickerdoodle is a creation of nineteenth century New England. This world favorite cookie is a soft sugar cookie lightly dusted with cinnamon. The term Snickerdoodle also originated in nineteenth century but it?s name has no purpose or meaning in particular. This mysteriously named cookie has a characteristicly crackly surface, and can be crisp or soft, depending on preference.

The interesting side of the snickerdoodle?s history is that the recipe won?t be found in any 18th-19th century American cookbooks. Plenty of recipes for currant cakes and jumbles combining sweet spices, nuts and dried fruits can be found though. Many of the first snickerdoodle recipes call for currant and other types of dried fruit. Some believe Snickerdoodles are a New England recipe with English origins, while others believe they are a creation of the Pennsylvania Dutch.
