Smithfield is a town located in Johnston County, North Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 11,510. It is the county seat of Johnston County{{GR|6}}.

Actress Ava Gardner was born a short distance from Smithfield, in Grabtown,and is buried here. The town has an Ava Gardner Museum. Smithfield is also the birthplace of professional wrestler Shane Helms, better known in the wrestling world as "The Hurricane".
