The novel is a thriller, following the main protagonist Smilla Jaspersen as she investigates the death of a child she befriended. The story begins in Copenhagen, where the child has plunged to his death from a snowy rooftop. Smilla, an outsider in Danish society who was raised as a Greenlandic Inuit, knows there is more to the apparent accident than meets the eye, because she has a feeling for snow. Her investigations lead her to conspiracies in Copenhagen, and then voyaging on an icebreaker to a remote part of Greenland.

The book was also produced as a 1997 movie of the same name starring Julia Ormond, Jim Broadbent, Gabriel Byrne, Richard Harris and Tom Wilkinson.
