During 1918, the army of newly formed Czechoslovakia was ordered to gain full control over Slovakia and attack the recently-established Hungarian Soviet Republic. A successful counterattack led to the occupation of a large part of Slovakia, where the new Soviet republic was established. After a reversal of military fortune, the Hungarian Soviet Republic's Red Guards retired to Hungary, and the Slovak Soviet Republic ceased to exist.
