Sloane Ranger

The term "Sloane Ranger" (often pluralised to just Sloanes) refers to the lifestyle of upper-middle class young women living in west London. It was coined by British author Peter York in his book the Official Sloane Ranger Handbook (co-authored with Ann Barr). The term combines "Sloane Square" (an area of London where these women would typically live or hang out) with "Lone Ranger". The term is now applied to men as well as women.

In the United Kingdom the term Sloane is used to describe the University educated, and wealthy elite of the Home Counties who usually display high levels of confidence and arrogance. Sticking to expensive brands such as Burberry, Jaeger and Barbour the British Sloane is the archetypal affluent achiever usually spawned from a wealthy or successful background whose parents own their own business, hold jobs in the city, or who themselves inherited wealth. Most Sloanes aspire to attend the intellectually elite universities of Cambridge and Oxford, however most fail to make the grade; thus second-tier universities such as the University of Exeter, which is widely believed to be the leading Sloane hot spot, tend to have a preponderance of Sloanes. Other notable examples are the Universities of Bristol and Durham. Contemporary Sloanes are generally loathed for their arrogance and perceived elitism.
