Whoopi Goldberg plays Deloris Van Cartier, a Reno, Nevada singer who witnesses her lover commiting murder, and has to go into hiding as a nun, "Sister Mary Clarence", in a convent. As well as cleaning the city, she takes charge of the choir, and transforms it into a more modern singing group by having the group sing covers of classic soul songs modified into gospel tunes.
