Long known as an innovative teaching university, SFU has moved toward research excellence. The university has recently created a new faculty of health sciences, invented the world's fastest bipolar transistor, and investigated the impact of technology on the nation's health sector. Scholarly research has been recognized with prestigious awards, including Governor-General's, Grawemeyer, Guggenheim, Manning and Pulitzer awards, Canada Council Killam research fellowships, NSERC industrial chairs, and gold medals from the Science Council of BC.
