Silvestre Reyes


 

Silvestre Reyes (born November 10, 1944) is a politician from the state of Texas, currently representing the state's 16th Congressional district (map) in the U.S. House.

Reyes was born in Canutillo, Texas. Reyes served in the United States Army and he worked for the Immigration and Naturalization Service. In 1993, Reyes lead the INS to position officers on the border to intercept illegal immigrants. Crime went down as a result of his move. Reyes resigned from the INS and began to run for Congress against Congressman Ron Coleman but Coleman retired. Reyes was elected to the House of Represenatives as a Democrat in 1996. Reyes is the leader of the Hispanic Caucus and in 2002, he considered running for the United States Senate but decided against such a move.
