Sideways

Sideways is a 2004 comedy/drama film, co-written and directed by Alexander Payne. It is based on the novel of the same name by Rex Pickett (ISBN 0312324669).

Plot summary

Paul Giamatti plays an unpublished writer, eighth-grade teacher, and oenophile named Miles, who takes his soon-to-be-married friend (played by Thomas Haden Church) on a week-long road trip through Santa Ynez wine country. Miles wants to drink wine and play golf, but Jack has other plans. He wants to "cut loose" before his wedding and have sex with other women. Soon after their arrival they cross paths with two women (played by Virginia Madsen and Sandra Oh) who change their itinerary in more ways than one.
