Shock rock


 

Shock rock is a music genre which combines rock music with elements of shock value in a stage performance involving acts of sex and/or violence which are designed to push the limits of decency.

Screamin' Jay Hawkins was arguably the first shock rocker. After the success of his 1956 hit "I Put A Spell On You," Hawkins began a stage show where he'd emerge from a coffin, sing to a skull and set off smoke bombs, among other gimmicks.

In 1966 Roxy Music opened for Alice Cooper, and seen as a growing figure of the Shock Rock sub-genre in the 70's with his spectacular yet contraversial shows he was a powerful inspiration for many future artists such as Gene Simmons (Kiss) of the mid 70's and Marilyn Manson of the 90's.

GG Allin, Arthur Brown, Alice Cooper, Ozzy Osbourne, Rob Zombie, Lordi, W.A.S.P., GWAR, Slipknot, White Zombie, Genitorturers, Motley Crue, and Marilyn Manson are also well-known for their shocking onstage antics.
