Sheikh Hasina


 

Sheikh Hasina Wajed (Bangla: ??? ?????? ???????) (born September 28, 1947) was the Prime Minister of Bangladesh from 1996 to 2001. She has been the President of the Awami League, a major political party in Bangladesh, since 1981. She is the eldest of five children of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the nationalist leader and first president of Bangladesh.

Early life

Sheikh Hasina was born in Tungipara in the Gopalganj district of erstwhile East Bengal (now Bangladesh) on September 28, 1947. This was her paternal home, the place where her father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was himself born. She is the eldest among five siblings. She studied at the Azimpur Girls' High School, Dhaka until 1965 when she went to receive a secondary education from the Governmeent Intermediate College. She graduated in 1967 and then went to the University of Dhaka which she graduated from in 1973.

In 1968, Hasina married Dr. M. A. Wazed Miah, a nuclear scientist.
