She's Out of My Life
"She's Out of My Life" was the fourth and last single released by singer Michael Jackson from his hugely-successful album, Off the Wall in 1980. Unlike the three previous singles, which were all dance-oriented funk/disco songs, this song was an emotional ballad, written by Tom Bahler. Jackson's vocals on this record were judged some of his best. A crucial moment in the song happened when Jackson, near the end of the song, began to break down in the studio and sang the word "life" with a breaking voice as he sobbed and moaned at the end. The song was one of the stand-out moments of Jackson's tours for the next fifteen years. It was covered more than twenty-five years later by soul singer Patti LaBelle for her album Classic Moments in 2005.

Jackson tried many takes of the last few minutes of the song, but always ended in the same way — breaking down in tears. Finally producer Quincy Jones allowed it into the song. It worked; the song peaked at number ten on the Billboard Hot 100.
