In common with many other new Formula One circuits, it was designed by Hermann Tilke. Contrary to popular belief, the resemblence of the track layout with the Chinese character Chinese character shang (上), which means 'above' or 'ascend', was not intentional, but rather coincidental. One lap lasts 3.4 miles (5.5 kilometres).
