Shamanism is a range of traditional beliefs and practices that involve the ability to diagnose, cure, and sometimes cause human suffering by traversing the axis mundi and forming a special relationship with, or gaining control over, spirits. Shamans have been credited with the ability to control the weather, divination, the interpretation of dreams, astral projection, and traveling to upper and lower worlds. Shamanistic traditions have existed throughout the world since prehistoric times.

Shamanism is based on the premise that the visible world is pervaded by invisible forces or spirits that affect the lives of the living. In contrast to animism and animatism, which any and usually all members of a society practice, shamanism requires specialized knowledge or abilities. This might be better expressed as 'shamans are the experts employed by animists or animist communities'. Shamans are not, however, often organized into full-time ritual or spiritual associations, as are priests. It is questionnable whether there was an -ism called "Shamanism" until such a thing was invented in the West out of the diverse practices of indigenous people in particular locations worldwide.

IF INTERESTED PLEASE EMAIL TO SET UP AN INITIAL PHONE INTERVIEW AND POTENTIAL IN-PERSON INTERVIEW THIS FRIDAY OR SATURDAY, NOV 21ST-22ND. THANK YOU ........................................... The Elmwood house is looking for a new community member. Perhaps you or someone you know would be a good fit for our loving and diverse family. About us: We are currently five people who live full, independent and lively lives. And that said, we deeply love the community and connection we share with each other. We range in age from late 30s to early 20s. We are professionals, professors, students, healers, writers, teachers, chefs, gardeners, dancers, facilitators, eco-conscious, lovers of life, and friends. We are all spiritually oriented in one way or another. Some practice yoga and meditation, others shamanism, and others are connected to bodies of work such as the Diamond Approach, Holistic Sexuality, or the S Factor. Though no common spiritual orientation is explicitly pursued, the spiritual vibe at the household is embodied, relational, and integrative of all dimensions of life. We officially meet twice a month, once for a business meeting and potluck dinner, and once for family time to check-in and discuss the emotional, relational, and practical challenges and joys of living together (or simply to hang out or play together). We often have impromptu gatherings and celebrations with each other. We all have chores around the house, such as emptying the garbage, taking out and turning the compost, watering the plants, or buying toilet paper and dish soap. Because we are a community house, a little extra work is required from each of us to keep our ship running smoothly (we keep an awesomely clean kitchen for a community house). A wonderful couple comes once a month to do a deep clean of all common spaces. We have a vegetable and fungal garden in our developing back yard, and a washer/dryer in the basement. We are looking for new a house and "family" member who has an attunement to shared values and a genuine willingness for community life. (**Please note, these collective costs cover all utilities, toilet paper, laundry detergent, cleaning supplies, house cleaning, etc.) About the House: We live in a gorgeous house in the heart of the Elmwood district. It includes: Two large living room areas full of windows & natural light High ceilings & hardwood floors Working Fireplace Great kitchen Sunny front & back yards Easy street parking & long driveway Detached Garage (soon-to-be creative/meditation space) Washer/dryer & storage space in basement Close to BART About the neighborhood: The Elmwood district of Berkeley is a wonderful area. We're about one mile from both the Ashby and Rockridge Bart stations, and one mile from UCB. You can walk to the Claremont Canyon for a quick and steep getaway into the east bay trees. UC Berkeleys swimming pools are also very close, as well as the Temescal lake, Tilden Park, and other natural resources. Please email to set up an initial phone interview if you are interested. In-person interviews will take place at the house this upcoming Friday and Saturday, Nov. 14th and 15th. Contemplative Spiritual Community (Oakland/Berkeley/etc.) $700
Does this describe you? You are a person committed to spiritual growth. Spiritual practice is a central focus in your life. You want to live with people who can support your path, as well as support others. You come from one or more of a wide variety of traditions (Buddhism/Christianity/Shamanism/Judaism/Sufism, etc.) You want to be in a community that shares spiritual practice - with regular periods of sitting, prayer, rituals, and learning about each others' traditions. You might have varied ways of doing good work in the world, either vocation and avocation or both - it might be teaching, activism, being a bodyworker or healer, nonprofit work, writing, gardening, or being an artist. You might work at home, or you might commute. You are progressive, and want to live in a smaller footprint. You might be queer, but you certainly are queer friendly. You are committed to intercultural and interfaith dialogue. You can see and feel the changes happening in the world, and you want to be a part of a community that can be a positive influence on those around you. Living in a community is an active choice you are making more than a practical reality. You want to live in a community that cooperatively shares food, cooking, and chores, as well as shares interesting theological, philosophical and political conversations. You don't regularly watch TV, and don't want a TV in common space. You might be omnivorous, vegetarian, or vegan but you respect others dietary choices, and want eat healthy food. You see authentic and open communication as the key to community living, and you are willing to look at your own triggers and reactions to things, at the same time as you are willing to share concerns with the community. I'm looking to find 2 or 3 people to begin the process of creating a community like this, hopefully over the next month, since I am at present looking for an abode. I'd like to ultimately form a community of 4 to 7. The dollar figure I put in the listing is somewhat arbitrary - but I would imagine a room would cost about this per person - possibly more (or less) depending on the size and location of the house we found, etc. Who am I? I am a 49 yr old African American lesbian, contemplative/mystic, Buddhist and progressive Christian, who does technology work with nonprofits, and writes science fiction.
