Kendal and his family, in real life, ran a travelling theatre company, with roles played by, among others, his two daughters, Jennifer and Felicity Kendal. The group visited schools throughout India, performing plays by William Shakespeare. This true story was taken by James Ivory as the basis for his film, in which the young Felicity Kendal starred opposite Shashi Kapoor, an Indian actor who was married to her sister Jennifer.

The Buckingham family (the Kendals' fictional equivalent) attempt to cling onto their way of life as post-colonial India loses interest in Shakespeare. Their daughter, the innocent Lizzie, falls in love with an Indian playboy who is involved with an older actress (played by Madhur Jaffrey). It eventually becomes clear that the romance is hopeless.
