Sewell's Point
:For other people and things named "Sewell", see Sewell (disambiguation)
Origins and variations of name
The area was apparently originally named in the 17th century after a Captain John Seawell, an Englishman who was a captain in the militia and grew tobacco on his land. Capt. Seawell is said to have preferred his name to be pronounced as Sow-el. According to old court records, the Episcopal churches in Norfolk are directly descended from the first Anglican church of Elizabeth River Parish "at Mr. Seawell's Pointe," begun in the late 1630s. The church stood somewhere within the present western limits of the US Naval Station Norfolk. Later, variations in spelling were used, such as Seawell's Point, and Sewall’s Point. The common spelling today is Sewell's Point.
