- sequence, a logical and mathematical notion
- In biochemistry, a biopolymer's sequence is synonymous with its primary structure: the list of basic building blocks constituting the polymer (for example a DNA sequence). Determining such a sequence is called sequencing.
- In mediæval Latin literature, a sequence (Latin sequentia) is a poem written in a non-classical metre that uses rhyme and an accentual (stress based) rather than quantititive (vowel length based) verse form. See, for example: Pange Lingua; Dies Iræ
- In the context of a Mass (liturgy), the sequence refers specifically to such a poem which is traditionally chanted between the reading of the epistle and the singing of the Gospel Acclamation.
- In music, a sequence is a passage which is successively repeated at different pitches (transposed). Sequences are either chromatic if exact or diatonic if they follow the scale being used. See also: Music sequencer.
- In dance, a sequence is a predefined series of movements.
- In film, a sequence corresponds to the theatrical term "scene".
