The story was written in the limerick form of poetry about a character who has built an amazing machine but its use has yet to be discovered. The name however was later adopted (1997) by a Kent State University avant garde performance/music group and after a lengthy court battle over the usage of the copyrighted protaganist's name, Janet Quin-Harkin agreed to allow the group to continue using the moniker with certain restrictions. One restriction was that the group could no longer perform a well known piece known as "the flying machine" which included the group's theremin player Shoeless Joe Boldensmith and bassist Michael Elam "battle style rapping" a section from the original text. The other restriction was the justifyable separation of text and group, which prohibited the group from selling any merchandise that bore resemblance to the artwork/or a flying machine associated with the text, in addition to the restriction of the sale of any merchandise on the same website as the original text.
