Semicha (סמיכה) (meaning "leaning ") is a Hebrew word referring to what may be roughly translated as the "ordination" (in Hebrew: semichut סמיכות) of a rabbi within Judaism. It is the "transmission" of rabbinic authority in the form of an authorization to give advice or judgment in Jewish law. It is often referred to as rabbinic ordination.
