Segregation
Segregation means separation. Its specific meaning varies with the context.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
- Human rights: Racial segregation is the separation of humans according to race. Sex segregation is the separation of humans according to sex.
- Biology: The separation of homologous chromosomes during mitosis and meiosis. Known as Mendel's theory of Segregation. See at Mendelian_inheritance#Mendel.27s_law_of_segregation.
- Geography: The separation of groups from a large population, especially into different areas.
- Traffic: The separation of high-traffic routes from areas where pedestrians have priority.
- Material Science: The inhomogeneous allocation of alloying additions and tramp elements in metall alloys.
- Criminal Justice: To keep an inmate of a prison separated from the other prisoners whenever possible. This is usually resorted to when the inmate fights with other prisoners, or as an added punishment onto a prison sentence.
