Secretary of State for Scotland
The Secretary of State for Scotland (Rùnaire Stàite na h-Alba in Scottish Gaelic) is the chief minister in the government of the United Kingdom with responsibilites for Scotland, at the head of the Scotland Office (formerly The Scottish Office). The post was first created in 1709 shortly after the union of the English and Scottish parliaments but after 1746 the position lapsed following the 1745 Jacobite rebellion and responsibility for Scotland was transferred to the Northern Department, and after 1782 to the Home Office.

- James Douglas, 2nd Duke of Queensberry (February 3, 1709 - July 6, 1711) (Died in office)
- John Erskine, 6th Earl of Mar (September 30, 1713 - September 24, 1714)
- James Graham, 1st Duke of Montrose (September 24, 1714 - August 1715) (Resigned)
- John Ker, 1st Duke of Roxburghe (December 13, 1716 - August 1725) (Resigned)
- Office thereafter vacant. One reference book claims Charles Douglas, 2nd Earl of Selkirk had this office from 1731 but there is no other authority for this claim.
- John Hay, 4th Marquess of Tweeddale (February 16, 1742 - January 3, 1746) (Resigned)
- Office thereafter vacant
