Second Congo War
The Second Congo War was a conflict that took place largely in the territory of Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire). The war began in 1998 and officially ended in 2003. However, a true peace has been elusive and the conflict has continued on a smaller scale in the eastern part of the country.

The widest interstate war in modern African history, it directly involved nine African nations, as well as about twenty armed groups, and earned the epithet of "Africa's World War". According to the International Rescue Committee, 3.8 million people have died, mostly from starvation and disease brought about by the deadliest conflict since World War II. Millions more have been displaced from their homes or have sought asylum in neighboring countries. The current standing death toll stands at 6.5 million, with 1,000 dying a day as a result of militias created by Uganda and Rwanda.
