The belief is closely tied to a belief in God, and a belief in prophets, sometimes called Messengers or Manifestations, who have some level of divinity or closeness to God. Almost every religious tradition has some form of prophecy of a return of one of these figures, or the coming of a new figure.

The messianic fervor was notable in the mid 19th century, when many people around the world believed to see the fulfillment of prophesies, and expected the imminent end of the world. It was during this time that many religious movements began, some of them becoming prominent religions of today, like the LDS church, the Bahá'í Faith, the Ahmadiyya movement, and the Jehovah's Witnesses.

Thought for Advent

It is coming to the time of the year, when I would like to pull the covers over my head and hibernate for at least 20 days. Not that it is not a beautiful time, but Advent is not just about preparing for the anniversary of Jesus' birth. It is a time for us to think about the second coming. It needs to be filled with three characteristics: repentance, expectation and hope. Repentance in a sense of reworking what our lives are about, making some things new, and correcting where things have gone wrong. Expectation is the best sense of the possibilities for today and tomorrow, not just a child in Bethlehem, but a new world, a coming kingdom. Hopeful, perhaps most allusive of the three, but equally as essential. Without hope there is no point to tomorrow, there is nothing to keep us going, encouraged and motivated. Advent is all three, and I trust you can see the potential as we prepare to remember that God sent God's own son into the world for us. JimClick Here for Sunday Readings
