On October 18, 2002, Penn placed a $56,000 advertisement in the Washington Post asking President George W. Bush to end a cycle of violence. It was written as an open letter and referred to the planned attack on Iraq and the War on Terror. Penn visited Iraq briefly in December 2002, largely eschewing meetings with the press.

He successfully rescued 40 people, including John Brown, age 73, who had told his sister over the phone: "Guess who come and got me out of the house? Sean Penn, the actor. The boys were really nice." Review: 'Milk'
Biopic about the first openly gay man to hold a major political office in America is bolstered by Sean Penn's superb performance as Harvey Milk.
Milk
Starring: Sean Penn, Emile Hirsch, James Franco, Josh Brolin, Diego Luna Review: Maybe you don't know a damn thing about gay activist Harvey Milk. Maybe you ought to know that President-elect Barack Obama isn't the only community organizer who went on to make a difference. Maybe thoughtful filmmaking, no matter how incendiary and intimate, isn't worth squat at an infantilized multiplex. Stop me now. There's really no maybe about Milk, directed with a poet's eye by Gus Van Sant from a richly detailed script by Big Love writer Dustin Lance Black. It's a total triumph, brimming with humor, heart, sexual heat, political provocation and a crying need to stir things up, just like Harvey did. If there's a better movie around this year, with more bristling purpose, I sure as hell haven't seen it. San Francisco City Supervisor Harvey Milk, the first openly gay man to be... Rating: 4 Stars

What Just Happened?
Starring: Robert De Niro, Bruce Willis, John Turturro Review: Think of it as old Hollywood's version of Entourage, an insider's take on the greed and vanity that make Tinseltown tick. Based on a memoir by producer Art Linson, the movie stars Robert De Niro, actually good for a change (Die! Die! Righteous Kill!), as a stressed producer. He's got a Sean Penn movie that's tanking at test screenings because a dog gets shot in close-up. He also has a film about to start with Bruce Willis, who balks at dieting and shaving his beard. ?The fucker is as fat and hairy as ever,? De Niro moans to John Turturro, as Willis' agent. Willis is a hoot as a nightmare version of himself. There are funny scenes, nicely directed by Barry Levinson. Other stuff, involving De Niro's ex-wife (Robin Wright Penn) and their daughter (Kristen Stewart), are not much of anything.... Rating: 2.5 Stars
