They started the 2004/2005 season in Football League Two, but have recently gained a promotion to Football League One after a startling comeback season. The Club was nearly relegated to the Conference National the season before.

Although before the start of the 2005/6 season Scunthorpe were predicted to fare badly, exciting new signings such as young striker Billy Sharp from Sheffield United, and ex-Stockport captain Jim Goodwin, the Iron seem to be set to do well in League One this season.
