Scottish Americans should not be confused with Scotch-Irish Americans, who in the US, are treated as being a completely separate ethnic group. Despite Scotland being one of the four constituent nations of the United Kingdom, most Scottish Americans do not consider themselves as being British Americans, the general term used to collectively describe Americans who are descended from the peoples of the British Isles.
