He was a pacifist and conscientious objector, although he served in the Navy for six months during World War I.

A long-time associate of Stringfellow Barr, he worked with Barr at St. John's College and organized its Great Books program. He directed Liberal Arts, Inc., a failed venture to create a Great Books-based college in Massachusetts from 1947 to 1949; 1948 to 1958 was a consultant, trustee, and secretary of the Foundation for World Government; and was one of the founders of, and a senior fellow at, the Center for the Study of Democratic Institutions.
