Scabbers
In the Harry Potter series by J. K. Rowling, Scabbers is the pet rat owned first by Percy Weasley, then by Ron Weasley.

Scabbers lived with the Weasley family from November 1981 through June 1994. During this time he was the scruffy pet rat of first Percy and then later Ron. Neither boy thought much of the fact that Scabbers was an unusually long-lived rat, at thirteen years.

In August of 1993, Scabbers accompanied the Weasley family to Egypt. Scabbers was shown in a photograph in the Daily Prophet, perched upon the shoulder of Ron Weasley. This prompted the famous escape of Sirius Black from Azkaban, as he recognized Scabbers for who he really was: Peter Pettigrew.

During the events in Prisoner of Azkaban, Harry learns that Scabbers was known as Wormtail when in his animagus form at Hogwarts. Wormtail, along with Moony, Padfoot, and Prongs, was a part of the group of Gryffindor students known to themselves as the Marauders. The Marauders would accompany Remus Lupin (alias Moony) in animagus form during his ordeals as a werewolf every full moon.

After the confrontation in the Whomping Willow, Peter escapes as Scabbers. He later aids in the rebirth of Lord Voldemort.

"Scabbers" is probably derived from "scab", a term for someone who does no work and scrounges off others. The term was later appropriated by the labor movement to indicate someone who fails to partake in a strike.
