Saved was Bob Dylan's first album of the 1980's, and his 24th overall. It was also his second "Christian"-themed album after his dramatic religious conversion captured on the previous year's Slow Train Coming. Unfortunately, while enjoyable and having its moments, Saved was considered an inferior follow-up and received lukewarm reviews upon release. It also served to further bewilder Dylan's rapidly shrinking legion of fans, for while it still made a healthy #3 in the UK, it only managed #24 during a break chart stay in the US and never went gold.

The cover of Saved originally featured a painting by Bob Dylan of God's hand reaching down to touch the hands of his believers. However, this cover was subsequently replaced by a painting of Dylan on stage performing during that time period in order to downplay the overtly religious nature of the original cover. It has since been changed back on some rereleases.
