The district was created in 1966 from a portion of Algoma West. For most of its history, the riding included only the city of Sault Ste. Marie and some immediately surrounding communities. In the Legislative Assembly of Ontario, however, the city of Sault Ste. Marie had its own electoral district as early as 1890.
