Sat.1 SatellitenFernsehen GmbH is a privately-owned German television broadcasting station. Sat.1 was the first privately owned television broadcasting station and started one day before RTL Television.

It started in January 1984 as PKS, initially a joint venture of various publishing houses. The first broadcast could only be seen by a few people who had cable.

Early programs included old films, mainly from the archives of KirchMedia, American hit-series and gameshows.

Later, the station acquired a name for its homemade series and TV films.

SAT.1 is currently owned by the Saban Group.
