The novel is set in the midwestern United States during the late 19th century. Caleb and Anna's father lost his wife, and he is very sad. Soon, he writes an ad in the newspaper and a woman named Sarah answers him. Sarah lives in Maine, so she comes for a visit. But Sarah seems homesick. When Sarah leaves for a little bit, the kids wonder if she will come back.
