San Diego County, California
San Diego County is a county located on the Pacific Ocean in the far southwest of California, along the border with Mexico. It is the third largest county by population in the state. As of 2000 the population is 2,813,833. The county seat is San Diego.
History
The county began with the founding of Mission San Diego de Alcala in 1769.

San Diego County was one of the original counties of California, created in 1850 at the time of statehood. Parts of the county were divided to create Riverside County in 1893 and Imperial County in 1907.

The county was named after San Diego Bay, which had been rechristened by Sebastian Vizcaino in 1602, in honor of the Franciscan, San Diego de Alcala de Henares, whose name was borne by his flagship.
