Same-sex marriage in New York

Same-sex marriage has yet to become firmly established in New York state; to date, Jason West of New Paltz officiated at a number of same-sex weddings in February 2004 whose legal status is uncertain, and more recently (February 2005), a New York state court has struck down New York's marriage laws inasmuch as they apply to gay couples. This ruling is on hold pending an appeal, and it applied to New York City only, though an appellate ruling would apply to a larger area. There have been five such similar lawsuits in New York state, with rulings in favor of the government in four.
