Samajwadi Party
Samajwadi Party (Socialist Party) is a political party in India. It describes itself as a democratic socialist party. It was founded on 4 October 1992. It is one of several parties that emerged when the Janata Dal was fragmented. SP is led by Mulayam Singh Yadav.

SP is primarily based in Uttar Pradesh, were is currently holds the state government. SP is mainly based amongst the Yadav caste, but also has large support from other groups such as Muslims.

In the 13th Lok Sabha (1999-2004), it was the 5th largest party with 27 members (3 of whom were expelled later).

In 2004 Lok Sabha elections, SP decided not to align with neither BJP nor Congress. Instead it ran in alliance with the Rashtriya Lok Dal.

In March 2005 Samajavadi Party got a boost as former Karnataka deserted BJP to join SP. When Bangarappa left BJP he resigned from Lok Sabha. In June 2005 Bangarappa was reelected to Lok Sabha in a bye-election in his constituency Shimoga, as a SP candidate.
